I'd prefer you use ( )( ) to indicate multiplication, not the letter x (which most often is a variable in algebra).

(-1)(-4) + (5)(3) + (-1)(-4)   =   4 + 15 + 4 = 23 (answer)
This is simple. First do all of the multiplication so the problem looks like this. 4+15+4. Then you add. The answer to this problem is ..... 23!!
