Probably the main event of 1991 was the collapse of the Soviet Union (it split into many countries, including Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, and of course, Russia)
Also, some events leading to the Yugoslav wars happened in this year, such as the War in Slovenia (that finished in the same year) and Croatian war of Independence, which did not finish this year.
