Well, as my teachers have put it, it's not fun to just hand out answers. Symbolism makes decoding the writing more exciting for the reader, and the answers are more meaningful. You remember something a lot better if you figure it out yourself than if you just hear it from someone else. Literature provides a safe environment to do just that.
